Why Math?

Learning mathematics or anything else is all about attitude and effort. Why can some people do well in one area and not another? Much of it has to do with having a desire to learn. No one can make you learn. You will not learn much against your will. If the driving force is upon learning  rather than grades then good grades ordinarily will follow through for you. If grades are the driving force then learning may take place but if the desire to learn is not there making the grade may be a burdensome task for you. Without the effort little is attained for most of us. As your teacher in mathematics, I see that is necessary for me to study, review , and contemplate mathematics. I teach mathematics because I enjoy the subject and I enjoy teaching willing, receptive minds who desire to learn. Mathematics is required for graduation; therefore, it seems that many people see the usefulness of mathematics. Mathematics is useful to develop skills in thinking, problem solving, and synthesizing and analyzing data. To succeed in learning mathematics to me is its own reward.

How can I learn to like mathematics?

Honestly, the best way to like it is to feel successful in doing mathematics. In order to feel successful you must practice it. I practice doing mathematics. I am not a mathematician but I need to keep in practice so I can continue  to do well in understanding the concepts of mathematics. Strive for understanding. Take good notes. Work out problems and take some time to think through what is being asked for in a question. We are going to do a great deal more in doing real world problems.

Here are some very useful websites to help you in mathematics:

Hotmath is especially great. It has the solutions, not just answers, to the odd - numbered problems in the textbook. It is absolutely free to you. It has been purchased by the school for our use and you should visit it nearly every day.  It has many lessons  that can help you learn the concepts of Algebra 2.

Coolmath is another excellent site for students. It has lessons and many other wonderful features that most students will like. Just check it out for yourself.

What jobs are available for those skilled in doing mathematics?

One of the best jobs which requires a good deal of mathematical knowledge is that of being an actuary. You can actually start working toward becoming an actuary while you are in high school. How do you like the sound of $120.000 a year? Tennessee has a shortage of actuaries. There are scholarships for minorities.  Check out this web site : Beanactuary.com

I will be adding more jobs in the following weeks.

Why not math?

It is not going away. Standardized tests have math, graduation requirements have math, excellent paying jobs have math. You can learn to like math if you give it some concentrated effort. However, not liking math is not really a good excuse for not trying. Recently when Japanese students were given a questionnaire about liking math, the majority of them answered that they did not like math. The average student in Japan is far above the average student in mathematics in this country. You have no really good excuse to not try to do what you know you should do.
